Winds of Change

There’s an irrefutable truth at work in the hearts of men: It is not good that the man should be alone (Gen 2:18). Thus, like the falling of leaves in winter, falling in love is also inevitable. Although we would like to simplify it down to the chemical response of a hormone rush, how and when and where are truly deep mysteries. As it is written in Proverbs, β€œThere be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid. β€œ

Meet Jennifer Grapa. There is much I could write about her but I hesitate because I believe there

are certain things that belong to us and to us alone. None the less, I can say that she is amazing and that I love her very, very much. She is self-disciplined, she has a strong personality and most importantly, she fears God. All of those things in a beautiful shell makes her perfect to me and for me. She is an oil to the calloused metal of machinery that my mind has become and everyday more and more I recognize that I need her.

When I first met Jen we both

endured great hardships with gossip and slander from those who were jealous of our affections and also from those I inadvertently offended in the process of our courtship (another story for another time). With patience and integrity she handled the ordeal as also did her family. Both her and her family are very dear to me and I am happy to announce our upcoming marriage in December. It can be truly said that they will not lose a daughter but they will gain a son. I can only hope to reward them with half as much as they have already given to me.

Really, I didn’t set out to fall in love with the youngest daughter of a poor rice farmer, it just happened that way. Being with her is somewhat ironic as I envisioned myself with a city girl; someone whom I thought might be more understanding of my strange and impatient American ways.

Jennifer is more than understanding though and I can barely fathom the strength of her patience. Everything she does is clothed with grace and spirit and I have no regrets about moving to this remote corner of the planet. If all I have is bamboo nipa hut with a dirt floor and her in my arms, I will die a rich man.

After we marry in December we will have a few months of dedicated time together with which she will help me finish my Ilongo lessons and then she will enroll in the local college. Jennifer was forced to drop out of the bible college she was enrolled in due to a no-courtship policy. I have promised her and her family that her education will continue and thus she will soon be majoring in Information Technology. This was her choice and and I was delighted to hear about it; her education will assist me greatly with all the websites I manage.

We haven’t decided where to live in the long-run. For now, we will abide here in Sara and I will invest some money with her father in commodities (the commodity in this case being rice). With a good return being expected, we’ll continue to save and re-invest. I can’t say I’m looking for huge returns on my money but then again you don’t need a lot to live here. The cost of living is insanely cheap and Jennifer is low maintenance. I’m often humbled with her contentment (and that of her family as well).

At this particular point in time, the wedding date is being set for December 21st. You, my devoted friends, are all invited to attend the ceremony and partake in the festivities. Food and drink and music are complimentary – sorry, you’re on your own with airfare and other transportation costs! Should you decide to fly in, I can offer you a bamboo bed and quite possibly a pillow (limited quantity available). But please, don’t worry if you can not attend, your wedding donation can still be sent via paypal πŸ™‚ Jennifer and I will appreciate it as one day we hope to have a cement floor. As always, more pictures to come.
