Loving Jennifer

It’s a common question they ask, “Why did you fall in love with her”? I run through the myriad of answers in my mind, evaluating the responses one by one and then ranking them by their merits. I could speak of her character, of her charming personality and just as equally of her beauty. Sometimes the best answer to such a question would be a simple I don’t know why I fell in love with her. I just did.

The latter would be more honest than the former and not just for myself. It would be as equally true for everyone. Consider that if I answer of her character, it is an answer short sighted as there are other women with integrity. If I speak of her charms, other women have their own. And should I choose to speak of her beauty then it is equally true that there are other women that fear God, possess great charms and are also very beautiful.

I believe Agur the Son of Jakeh stated it best:

There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid. Proverbs 30:18-19

So then why Jennifer? Why is she special? God knows. I don’t mean that in the ambiguous sense of ‘who knows’ either. I mean it quite literally. God knows why we were/are attracted to each other. There is something in her that completes me and something in me that completes her. To narrow it down to those few physical attributes that I can identify would never do it justice and our love would be robbed of the divinity it possesses. It is that unique divinity in her that I learn about everyday.

However, loving Jennifer is more than just a divine choice that was made. Loving her is belief, it is hope and, even more, it is doctrine. My love for her is where the line is drawn and nothing can cross it. I will live by it. I will die by it. The fact that I would make the same choice again is an irrevocable truth that was cemented beneath the vows we made; a foundation never removed.

And lying now by her side
These blankets of grace & charm
A Love stronger than the tide
Surpassing cupid’s arm

Waking dreams of sweet everythings
Casting shadows on fairy tales
There’s no defending the happy ending
When passion never fails

For even as the earth needs rain
And Cupid’s arrow another mark
I hold her hand like I hold her name
Till death does us part
