Money Raised For Homeless Man Who Returned Diamond Ring

Kansas city resident Sarah Darling wasn’t intending to give more than a bit of change to Billy Ray Harris when she emptied her purse into his cup but she did. As she let the change drop from her bag, her diamond engagement ring also dropped in. A full day passed when she realized the probability of where it had fallen and, quite naturally, panic ensued.

Returning the next day, Billy was gone. She endured another day of searching and found him. There was no debate, no conflict, and no bickering arguments over the property. Billy had tucked the ring away safely, waiting for her return.homeless

“I asked him … ‘I don’t know if you remember me, but I think I gave you something that’s very precious to me,’ and he says, ‘Was it a ring? Yeah, I have it, I kept it for you,'”

Sarah was shell shocked at the honesty.

In appreciation for his kindness, Sarah and her husband set up an online donation campaign for the gentleman. His honesty has been greatly rewarded as nearly $100,000 dollars has poured in (94K per CNN). People everywhere seem to be moved by the act of integrity: one man returning something so valuable in his possession simply because it didn’t belong to him.

The irony of the outpouring isn’t lost on Billy Harris though.

“I like it, but I don’t think I deserve it….What I actually feel like is, what has the world come to when a person who returns something that doesn’t belong to him and all this happens?”

I think we can all read the story and feel a bit elated – an honest man gets a second chance at making his life better (and possibly the life of others as well). But Billy is right. What has society become when people, in this economic downturn, reach into their wallets to help basic honesty?

Ultimately it means that people have forgotten the definition of mercy. We will only help people that we think deserve it because we believe people can and should deserve it. It’s a thinking, a belief system, that is the polar opposite of what Jesus taught. The bible teaches us to help those that need it and love your neighbor, even when they did nothing to merit the assistance. Recognizing that fact is truly Billy’s greatest reward.

Jon, Thank you for this. You are spot on. You’ve identified one reason of many the current Church is long overdue for another reformation.
